On February 7, H.E. Ambassador Liu Jin met with Ms. Ndeye Rose Sarr, Representative of The United Nations Population Fund in The Gambia at the embassy.
Ambassador Liu highly praised the important role of UNFPA in promoting the development of The Gambia along with other UN agencies and appreciated the efforts of UNFPA to improve the medical and health conditions in The Gambia. The Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in The Gambia is willing to strengthen exchanges between the two sides and jointly contribute to the development of the medical and health sector of The Gambia.
Ambassador Liu also briefed Ms. Sarr on the medical and health cooperation between the People’s Republic of China and The Gambia. He mentioned that medical and health sector is one of the priorities of the cooperation between China and The Gambia, and the Chinese government has repeatedly provided medical supplies to the Gambia, dispatched several medical teams, and carried out cooperation in the fight against COVID-19 in the past three years. This year, the Chinese government will donate medical supplies to four historically Chinese-aided health centers in central part of The Gambia to further activate the aforementioned health centers for the benefit of the local population. China and The Gambia will also strongly cooperate in capacity building, and China will provide more training opportunities in China for Gambian medical personnel.
Ms. Sarr mentioned that China is an important partner of UNFPA and the Chinese support is highly appreciated by UNFPA. Ms. Sarr introduced the efforts made by UNFPA in improving the conditions of hospitals in The Gambia, upgrading the level of obstetrics and gynecology care and population census, etc. She looked forward to strengthening cooperation with China in The Gambia under the framework of South-South cooperation, and continuously helping The Gambia to improve the situation of medical and health.
